Jon Szin is a San Francisco-based clarinetist, arts administrator, and educator dedicated to advancing music education, artistic excellence, and community engagement. With a career spanning performance, nonprofit leadership, and arts education, Jon brings a collaborative and innovative approach to connecting musicians, audiences, and communities through music.
Jon currently serves as Director of Operations & Communications for Peninsula Youth Orchestra (PYO), where he oversees organizational operations, program administration, and communications for one of the San Francisco Bay Area's established youth orchestra organizations. In this leadership role, he manages the operational delivery of orchestral and chamber music programs, coordinates concert production and educational activities, supervises administrative staff, and leads communications and audience engagement initiatives. Working closely with artistic leadership and organizational stakeholders, Jon helps strengthen PYO's infrastructure, improve operational efficiency, and support meaningful musical experiences for hundreds of young musicians each season.
Previously, Jon served as Program Manager for Music for Minors, supporting music education programming, educator development, and program delivery across Bay Area schools. His work built upon his experience as a teaching artist with the organization, where he provided introductory clarinet instruction to more than 200 elementary school students annually in the San Mateo-Foster City School District.
As Managing Director of the wind octet Nomad Session, Jon has played an integral role in commissioning and championing new works for winds and brass. The ensemble's album, VOYAGE, recorded in collaboration with clarinetist Jeffrey Anderle, features commissioned works including Nomad Concerto by Jonathan Russell and Black Dog by Scott McAllister. Through his artistic and administrative leadership, Jon has helped expand the contemporary chamber music repertoire while creating opportunities for collaboration among composers and performers.
An active performer, Jon has appeared with chamber ensembles and orchestras throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, including performances with Keyed Kontraptions and affiliations with InterMusic SF. His performance credits include appearances at the Kennedy Center and on Broadway in A Christmas Carol, as well as contributions to the soundtrack of the Academy Award-nominated animated short film The Dam Keeper.
In addition to his administrative and performing work, Jon maintains a private clarinet studio in San Francisco, mentoring students who have earned admission to institutions including Oberlin College and New York University.
Jon holds a Master of Music in Clarinet Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Jeffrey Anderle and received Departmental Honors in clarinet and orchestral studies. His previous mentors include Luis Baez and Dr. Margaret Thornhill.
